A small but quality team headed to the marathon Europeans, the team representing from Salmon Leap would be:
Masters- Declan Halton
Women K1-Aisling Smith
Mens K1- Barry Watkins and Jonathan Simmons
Conditions were HOT and very windy, the area was stunning and the course other then the wind was very simple with the only major obstacle being the 260m portage (Very Long)
Up first was Declan competing in the masters race, Dec didn’t get of to the best start but slowly clawed his way back through the field and finished a creditable 5th.
Then up next would be Aisling in the Senior women K1, it was very tough racing conditions for Aisling, the heat was up and the wind was down! she gave her all and finished up in a very creditable 10th place. A lot learnt and will hopefully look forward to her season developing during the year!
Next up was the Senior mens! this was a strongly attended field and was going to be tough one for Barry and Jon, Jon representing Ireland for his first time was quoted “I hope I can do the Ireland proud”.
So of they went and it saw Barry leading the field for the start and Jon in the back end of the group, great to see the two Irish in the front group. Then things got heated and Jon saw himself spat out of the group and Barry continued to paddle well with the front group till lap four, As the race went on Barry finished in 8th and Jon in 12th. Well done guys and all the best for the rest of the season…
