Position as Fulltime Canoeing Coach

(1 year contract)

 

Salmon Leap Canoe Club is a large competition focused canoe club located on Leixlip Lake in North Kildare.   The club has a vibrant tradition of introducing young people from the local community to competitive canoeing.  We see ourselves as having members who excel in the areas of Slalom, Sprint, Marathon and Wild Water canoeing; however there is also large number of members who paddle just for the pleasure and fitness.   The facilities of the club are among the best in Ireland and include:

 

  • Access to a 2KM flat water lake which can be used throughout the year.
  • Proximity to Celbridge rapids (700 m upstream from the club)
  • Boat storage for 200 kayaks
  • Well equipped heavy weights gym
  • Large aerobic fitness gym equipped with paddling machines.
  • 1 Hectare of grounds
  • Club room, changing rooms, kitchen etc.

 

Our members have in the past achieved success at numerous national and international competitions.  We have also had some members who have had medal success at world championship level and the club is unique in Ireland in having at least one member represent Ireland at every Olympic Games since 1972.

We want to accelerate the numbers of young people we can introduce and encourage within the club and consequently have decided to appoint a Fulltime Coach.   


Role:- 

  • Have safety as a priority and ensure a safe and enjoyable training environment.
  • Introduction of young people to canoeing in a systematic and planned structure
  • Development of young club members in the skills of Sprint, Marathon and Wild Water canoeing.  
  • Introduction of young club members to strength and fitness training in a safe, progressive and planned method
  • Increase club membership by actively seeking and developing new members
  • Report regularly to an appointed manager

This role would be suitable for a person with the following attributes:- 

  • A passion for the goals outlined above
  • Good leadership and communication skills
  • An ability to work on your own and to be self motivated
  • An appreciation of an opportunity to be involved in a new initiative where your role will be pivotal.

The Ideal candidate will have the following experience:

  • ICU/BCU or relevant qualifications preferable (Kayak Coach/Instructor)
  • Have participated in competitive canoeing or have an interest in competitive canoeing with a relevant third level sports science qualification
  • Have the physical attributes required of a canoeist to perform this demanding role.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

Salmon Leap Canoe Club is a 150 member strong canoe club situated on Leixlip Lake. The club is strongly focused on competition and development and has been hugely successful since its early beginnings in 1961, including representing Ireland at every Olympic Games since 1972. 

Due to our continued expansion and progression we are now seeking a full time coach to bring the canoe club and our athletes to the next level. 


Job responsibilities:- 

  • Developing all athletes in Salmon Leap Canoe Club through structured and/or supervised training sessions
  • Conduct water, gym and all other necessary training sessions
  • Increase club membership by actively seeking and developing new members
  • Ensure a safe and enjoyable training environment for all athletes
  • Report regularly to an appointed manager


Experience:

  • ICU/BCU or relevant qualifications preferable (Kayak Coach/Instructor)*
  • Sports science/gym instruction knowledge/experience
  • 5 years +  Participation in competitive canoeing scene

 

 

*Alternatively: A willingness to pursue such qualification may be considered.
